Workshop Summary

Coding 101 for Beginners (1 day - Wednesday, Sept. 17)
This session is designed for beginner coders with a basic understanding of home health and OASIS and will provide the "background" of why we have to do what we do. We will learn how to use the coding manual and learn the basics of sequencing. Common home care diagnoses with specific sequencing rules will be discussed and presented. (Basic understanding of the above principles will be tested on the HCS-D exam, to be offered on Friday afternoon.)

Upon completion, the registrant will have learned:
w Basics of the OASIS diagnosis items and the instructions from CMS, including MO246;
w The relationship between OASIS, PPS and diagnosis coding;
w Basic principles of using the coding manual;
w Sequencing basics such as manifestation codes;
w Prioritizing the plan of care and sequencing accordingly, and
w Sequencing of common home care diagnoses, such as diabetes, DVAs and therapy cases.

**Please be sure to bring a current ICD-9 Coding manual to this session!**

Coding 201 for Intermediate and Advanced (1 1/2 days - Thursday, Sept. 18 and Friday morning, Sept. 19)
Think you have the basics down pat? We will start this session with a quick overview of the basics and then progress to coding in the New PPS, with special attention to coding the new case mix diagnoses appropriately. Those who code accurately shouldn't miss out on the case mix points that less skilled coders may miss. This class will provide plenty of opportunity to try out your skills in coding common home care scenarios with the PPS Refinement arena, along with more complex scenarios. Application of the official guidance is the name of the game. Find out how diagnoses affect your outcomes and discuss those diagnoses causing problems in medical review. (This session is good preparatory for taking the HCS-D exam, to be offered on Friday afternoon.)

**Please be sure to bring a current ICD-9 Coding manual to this session!**

**Please note: This workshop will not be recorded and, therefore, no tape or CD will be available for purchase.
