Home Care Licensing is Subject of Health Department Briefing and HCAC Board Dialogue

In an uncommon atmosphere of give and take, Colorado Health Department Chief Medical Officer Ned Calonge, MD, MPH, far right, and Health Facilities Division Director Howard Roitman engaged in a serious discussion of industry licensing to be introduced this session.

A bill to license the state's home care agencies is being brought forth by the Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment in response to reported harm to consumers by certain certified home health agencies that could not be addressed by the Medicare survey / certification process.

HCAC has been working with the Dept. since early November on amendments including:
1. Coverage of all entities that provide home care services in Colorado
2. Ensure the least amount of regulatory burden and cost to home care agencies.
3. Provide reduced licensure fees for Medicare and Medicaid certified agencies.
4. Prohibit duplicate survey and reporting requirements for certified agencies.
