Face-To-Face Encounters
for Home Health Certification

CAHABA GBA, one of the Medicare home health & hospice contractors, issued a correction to the educational tool sent to providers last week about the Medicare home health face-to-face encounter requirements that go into effect on 1/1/2011. In accord with the language in the PPS final rule, CAHABA amended its original guidance, acknowledging that physicians and non-physician practitioners who conduct face to face encounters may be employed by the home health agency as long as they meet the financial relationship exceptions set forth in Stark and Anti-kickback regulations. Additionally, Cahaba deleted the original statement that “HHAs held responsible for producing the physician’s certification documentation when requested.” According to the PPS Final Rule, CMS will not hold HHAs responsible for physician medical record documentation.  The Cahaba site for the document below is:
