“What
Home Care Providers Need
to Know About Health
Care Reform”
A
90-Minute Lunch & Learn
Audio-Conference
(beneficial for all
providers, hospice, HME
and private duty!)
by

Health
care reform will
undoubtedly result in
changes with far
reaching effects on home
health agencies,
hospices, and home
medical equipment (HME)
companies. There will,
for example, likely be
significant changes
regarding patients'
right to freedom of
choice of
providers. Increased
utilization of
telemedicine makes it
important for providers
to know how to manage
their risks related to
its use. Providers will
likely also be subject
to more stringent fraud
and abuse compliance
requirements. The
purpose of this
audio-conference is to
provide insight and
details regarding these
changes with an emphasis
on practical application
to operations.

Coding Skills 101 & 201
for Home Care
Professionals
A
2 1/2 Day Workshop
by Lisa Selman-Holman,

COS-C
November 3 - 5, 2010
The Summit Event Center
Aurora, Colorado
Coding 101 - Fundamental
Skills for Beginners
(1 day - Wednesday, Nov.
3)
This class is designed
to teach fundamental
coding skills to coders
who have a basic
understanding of home
health and OASIS. This
class will provide the
“background” of why we
have to do what we do.
You will learn how to
use the coding manual
and learn the basics of
sequencing. Common home
care diagnoses with
specific sequencing
rules will be discussed
and presented. This
course is good for all
skill levels of coders -
from understanding the
basics to refining your
current coding skills.
Coding 201 - Advanced
Skills for Coders
(1 1/2 days - Thursday,
Nov. 4 and Friday
morning, Nov. 5)
Think you have the
basics down pat? We
start with a quick
overview of fundamental
coding skills and then
progress to coding in
PPS, with special
attention to coding the
case mix diagnoses
appropriately. Those who
code accurately
shouldn’t miss out on
the case mix points that
less skilled coders may
miss nor be accused of
upcoding. This class
will provide plenty of
opportunity to try out
your skills in coding
common home care
scenarios within the PPS
Refinement arena, along
with more complex
scenarios. Application
of the official guidance
is the name of the game.
Find out how diagnoses
affect your outcomes and
discuss those diagnoses
causing problems in
medical review. This
class will provide a
review of the changes to
coding with OASIS C.
This seminar is a good
preparatory for taking
the HCS-D exam. The HCS-D
exam will be provided,
which is a separate fee
and payable to BMSC (see
below to register).

This year also saw a
transition in HCAC's

turn the gavel over to
president-elect, Diana
Prime. Since 2003, Diana
has been on the board of
directors and has been
an ongoing member of
various HCAC
councils/committees. We
are very excited to
welcome Diana to the
helm of HCAC!
It is with much
gratitude that we say
goodbye to Sonya Neumann
as our fearless leader
of the past two years.
Sonya has worked
tirelessly on behalf of
HCAC's members and has
proven an exemplary
